Just had this same problem.  HPL uses a symbolic link for your $HOME
directory while it's building.  So since you are root, your $HOME is
/root/.  If you extract
the tarball in /root/ instead of /home/ then it will work.
Alternatively, you can take out references of $HOME in the Make.arch file.
