From deadline at linux-mag.com Sun Sep 21 13:06:27 2008 From: deadline at linux-mag.com (Douglas Eadline) Date: Sun Sep 21 13:06:53 2008 Subject: [HPC-Writers] Writers Update Message-ID: <56546.192.168.1.213.1222016787.squirrel@mail.eadline.org> Note: two story proposals coming in next email. BACKGROUND: ----------- For the remainder of 2008 and January of 2009, we have a need for well written HPC content. Each article is to be about 2500-3000 words. We are paying $500 (US) per article. As editor, I will supply topics and guidance on article preparation. As many of you may know, Linux Magazine is now a web-only publication. As such there is more flexibility in article preparations and lead time. The HPC website: ---------------- http://www.linux-mag.com/resource-centers/todays-hpc-clusters Was launched this last year, I have a budget for 4-5 additional articles for the remainder of 2008/2009. The story topics are determined in advance by the editorial team. As opportunities become available, I will post them to the list. I expect to have other articles as well. Author Selection ---------------- There are now over 50 names on the HPC writers mailing list. Therefore I will need to assign specific stories to Authors. The process will be as follows 1. Stories will be announced on this mailing list 2. If you have interest in a story, I will need an outline and brief one paragraph summary sent to me (not to the list), and the amount of time required to write it, once it is assigned. 3. If I choose your story, I will contact you directly. 4. There are some seasoned authors on the list who have written for me before. Obviously, they will get some preference because they are a known commodity. See below on how to become a known commodity (i.e. get experience and exposure) 5. The time frame in which you can write and submit a story is important as well. Often the quicker you can get it done the better and provided I like the outline, may help in selection. In addition, not submitting a story on an mutually agreed upon due date will drop you down on my preference list. If you are having a time issue contact me, but don't just let a deadline slip. How to Become a Preferred Author -------------------------------- As I mentioned some of my authors are seasoned and experienced. Obviously, having prior experience helps a great deal. If you written other articles/columns please include them a link or pdf in a proposal. Finally, if you want to "show what you can do" submit a story idea and outline for publication on ClusterMonkey.net. Cluster Monkey is a free (no registration) community site which has little or no editorial budget. The caliber of article is quite high however. In addition to writing and editing for Linux Magazine, I also run clustermonkey.net. Please send any Cluster Monkey proposals to deadline@clustermonkey.net -- Doug Douglas Eadline deadline@linux-mag.com Senior HPC Editor Linux Magazine From deadline at linux-mag.com Sun Sep 21 13:18:25 2008 From: deadline at linux-mag.com (Douglas Eadline) Date: Sun Sep 21 13:18:49 2008 Subject: [HPC-Writers] Stories needed Message-ID: <55332.192.168.1.213.1222017505.squirrel@mail.eadline.org> I have two stories needed for the Linux Magazine website. Please see the previous email for story submission. The Ct Language ---------------- Intel has developed a new programming language for parallel computing called Ct. The Article should cover what is new/different about the language and what problem/markets it hopes to address. Include some code examples and where to get the tools etc. http://techresearch.intel.com/articles/Tera-Scale/1514.htm The State of MPI ---------------- What is the current status of MPI software. The article should focus on the Open versions (OMPI and MPICH2) and some of the more popular commercial versions (Intel, Scali). Include the latest version and features etc. Also address the fact that LAM and mpich1 are in maintenance mode and use is discouraged. Also, it might be important to illustrate that applications should link and run between different MPIs. -- Doug
