A good way around this is to run nscd (Name Services Caching Daemon). 
Its part of glibc and will cache a lot of that info on the local nodes. 
That way if you're stating a bunch of files all owned by the same user,
it'll go over the network once to get the info, but all future requests
will be handled by nscd, and you won't see any network traffic for it.
