problem allocating large amount of memory

Bill,
thanks a lot for your help.
Please find attached a little test program. I use
g++ -O -Wall memchk.cpp -static -o memchk
Afaik size_t is unsigned long on 32 bit systems and long long is the
same.
I've linked the code first dynamic then static with no differences in
the amount I am getting.
