grid-level 'wulf?

Has anyone started playing 'Beowulf on a grand scale' with some of the 
grid computing initiatives?  If so, how? Are you:
Linking existing clusters?
aggregating geographically challenged nodes into a grid-based cluster?
Something else?
What networking protocols for dispersed systems across carrier-based 
network clouds?
