David,

I believe that you have more to worry about from the current quality 
control on Hard Drives than 1u vs. 2 u server. I have 32 1u servers that 
I purchased in 2003. I have 90 from 2004, 25 from 2005, 70 from 2007.

My failures include 1 processor/mb from the 2003 batch, and a few Hard 
Drives from the 2005 and 2007 batches.

Most of my machines are opterons, the 2003 models are Xeons.
