[Beowulf] Passwordless ssh - strange problem

ownership and perms on ~/.ssh on both sides?

does remote /etc/ssh/sshd_config preclude keys?
Check PreferredAuthentications

What does ssh -v say?

The agent doesn't need to handle identities w/o passphrases.
