there are several research papers that explore the issues in doing this.
try a lit review.  some that randomly pop to the top of my stack:

Using network memory to improve performance in transaction-based systems

Using remote memory to avoid disk thrashing

Memory servers for multicomputers

Implementation of a reliable remote memory pager
