huh? smartsuite contains smartd which queries your smart-capable drives
and logs changes in parameters to syslog. I don't know why you call this
"bios-type" though, since bios and syslog never meet. the kernel is only
ah, peripherally involved.

as far as I know, smartctl's self-test controls give you the equivalent
of IBM's DFT.
