I think this particular workaround should already be in the kernel.

for this kind of problem, it makes a lot of sense to make sure you've
got the latest bios installed, spend some time scrutinizing all your 
bios settings, and also look at verbose lspci output.  I'd also consider
trying with/without uniprocessor-local-apic support in the kernel.
